The keepers are already forming strong relationships with these scarlet macaws.

Earlier this spring, male scarlet macaws Boris and Mango arrived at the Zoo in colorful fashion. This rambunctious duo are the first new birds brought in for the free-flight area of Rainforest Revealed, which will open later this year.

Twenty-nine-year-old Boris and 27-year-old Mango both came to us from Palm Beach Zoo, where they lived together for several years. They currently live behind the scenes with a large congregation of scarlet ibises that will also flock to the new habitat when it’s complete.

These highly social animals can live up to 75 years in human care and originate from Central and South America. Although they are not yet at risk of extinction, scarlet macaws are threatened by the illegal pet trade.
