Volunteer with seed sticks

Did you know our volunteers make the cockatiel seed sticks by hand?

Although we appreciate our volunteers every day, April 7–13 is National Volunteer Appreciation Week, so we’ve decided to highlight just how much our volunteers contribute to the Zoo and its missions.

In 2018:

  • 604 volunteers gave their time on a regular basis
  • Volunteers donated 116,000 hours
  • Volunteers saved the Zoo $2.3 million in salary
  • Volunteers made 31,000 seed sticks and 11,500 collectible conservation buttons

Volunteers play very important roles here at the Zoo and contribute to a variety of different areas from kayaking and Treetop Trek to animal handling and special events. We wouldn’t be the Zoo we are today without them, so thank you to everyone who has given time back; we appreciate you!
