Bird-friendly coffee

Order up! Visit our Nourish 321 cafe to try it out.

Did you know that three quarters of the world’s coffee is farmed using practices that displace birds or actively destroy forest habitat? When forests disappear, birds and other wildlife disappear, too. To combat this, we have decided to make the switch to Smithsonian Bird Friendly® certified Peruvian coffee at our Nourish 321 café!

Smithsonian Bird Friendly certified coffee poster

This Smithsonian poster shows one of the species that is affected by bird-friendly coffee.

Bird Friendly® coffee comes from farms that provide forest-like habitats for birds and other wildlife. They are shade grown, which means the coffee is planted under a canopy of trees rather than land that has been cleared of all other vegetation.

This coffee isn’t just good for the environment, it’s good for you, too! Bird Friendly® coffees are certified organic as they are grown without the use of chemical pesticides.

Smithsonian Bird Friendly® coffee maintains the strictest environmental criteria, making it the most biodiversity-friendly coffee on the market—and the right choice for us as a conservation organization.

The price of this coffee will be slightly higher than normal as the products themselves cost more to obtain. We hope that you will understand that it is a small price to pay for the benefit to birds and other wildlife, coffee farmers and the health of our planet!

We hope you’ll join us for a cup of coffee during your next visit. If you prefer to drink your cup o’ joe at home, you can do your part by buying your own Bird Friendly® coffee! Look for the Smithsonian Bird Friendly® seal on the product packaging of your coffee. You can also buy bird friendly certified coffee at drinkbirdfriendly.com.

In the near future, we hope to have a Zoo Chat about Bird Friendly® coffee that will include a tasting. Stay tuned for more information!

Please note that the Nourish 321 café at the Zoo will now only sell this type of coffee; however, Slice and Cones (the smaller food area by the Paws On loop) will continue to sell nitro coffee.

Brevard Zoo is an independent, not-for-profit organization that receives no recurring government funding for our operating costs. Your generous support enables us to continue to serve our community and continue our vital animal wellness, education and conservation programs.
