Reggie and Raina have been getting along great!
We have a new animal resident monkeying around our Rainforest loop! Reggie, formally Reginald Von Howler, the black howler monkey has recently moved into our Flooded Forest habitat in Rainforest Revealed. Reggie’s arrival is thanks to a Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding recommendation through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). He was paired with Raina, our 6-year-old black howler monkey, and they have been doing very well since being introduced. In their initial days together, they were already comfortable snuggling close and grooming one another.
“The pair have been inseparable since meeting,” said Grace. “The Rainforest team has been so happy to see the sweet bond Reggie and Raina formed so quickly.”
While Reggie arrived a bit hesitant and unsure about the keepers in his space, he’s already started to get more comfortable in his new home. He has started forming bonds with some of his animal care team, beginning training sessions and accepting snacks from certain keepers. So far, he has shown off a “sweet and mellow” personality, noted Grace.
While you can catch a glimpse of this new duo foraging around their habitat or swinging from branch to branch during the day, most of their time is spent napping in sunny spots or engaging in social grooming. If you can’t seem to spot them, try looking on the pergola roofs for two sunbathing monkeys.
For now, our original black howler troop: Baya and her sons Bruno, Banjo and Buster remain at our Zoo, although they live in separate habitats from Reggie and Raina. The SSP program has asked that the family move to another AZA-accredited organization in the future with the good of this species in mind.
We’re excited for the opportunity Reggie and Raina have to help conserve their species’ decreasing population and ensure diverse genetics for future generations. We’ll keep you updated on any interesting developments (babies!) with these two.
