This expansion will essentially double the size of the coati habitat.

An expansion of our white-nosed coati habitat in Rainforest Revealed is underway. Plans call for the construction of a second “module” that will connect to the current living space through a tunnel that can be opened or closed to meet the animals’ needs.

The new module will be outfitted with climbing structures and a small pool to encourage the expression of natural behavior. The existing module will receive a light refurbishment.

We currently have two coatis—14-year-old female Katie and 10-year-old female Lupita—both of whom are considered geriatric. Once the expansion is complete, we hope to acquire a breeding pair to support the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP). Our general curator, Lauren Hinson, is the white-nosed coati SSP coordinator.

White-nosed coatis are highly adaptable animals that can be found in rainforests, grasslands and deserts ranging from northern South America up to Arizona. As adults, males are typically solitary, and females live in groups called “bands.”
