Educational programming is a core component of accreditation.

This weekend, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) announced our accreditation has been renewed for another five years. Fewer than 10% of the roughly 2,800 USDA-licensed animal exhibitors have earned this distinction.

“Only the very best zoos and aquariums can meet the ‘gold standards’ set for accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums,” says AZA president and CEO Dan Ashe. “By achieving AZA accreditation, Brevard Zoo demonstrates that it is committed to exemplary animal care and welfare, educational and inspiring guest experiences, and AZA’s mission to conserve our world’s wild animals and wild places.”

We underwent a thorough review to ensure we have and will continue to meet the highest standards of animal wellness, safety and financial stability, and conduct significant conservation and educational programming. This included a detailed application and a meticulous onsite inspection conducted by a team of zoo and aquarium experts from around the country. Finally, top officials were interviewed at a formal hearing by AZA’s independent accreditation commission.

So what does this mean for you, our community and the planet? AZA accreditation is an assurance we’re dedicated to providing the best possible care to our animals and a better future for all living things. Here are just a few of the feats we accomplished last year alone:

As a member, it also gives you access to 50% off general admission to more than 120 zoos and aquariums in North America (including eight right here in Florida). Be sure to look for the AZA logo when traveling!
