Enjoy Halloween treats and go green!

‘Tis the season for haunted houses, spooky costumes and, of course, handfuls of candy. Whether you enjoy sweet treats year-round or treat yourself on Halloween night, it’s important to remember to responsibly discard your candy wrappers.

Did you know most candy wrappers aren’t accepted into single-stream recycling? This means every year, a countless number of wrappers end up in our landfills and ecosystems. Fortunately, there is an easy way to go green this Halloween! On your next Zoo visit, gather your candy trash pile and drop it off to be recycled and reused.

We are participating in Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s (LMC) Unwrap the Waves initiative, which calls on students and community members to collect their Halloween candy wrappers and recycle them at a participating drop-off location. Once the initiative concludes, LMC will collect and recycle the candy wrappers through Terracycle’s Zero Waste Program. The wrappers will then be repurposed into school supplies like notebooks and pencils.

The Zoo’s drop-off box is located outside the main entrance next to the Eco-Cell electronics recycling receptacle. The program will run through November 10, so be sure to swing by before then and drop your wrappers off!

Want to do the upcycling yourself? Plastic wrappers from candy bars and other treats can be turned into items like bags or home décor!
