Tisa is still easy to spot among the tower!

We have a little giraffe update for you! It’s been over a year since Tisa, our newest and smallest Masai giraffe, joined our giraffe tower. Tisa, who was born at Virginia Zoo, joined our herd as part of the Species Survival Plan for Masai giraffes. This is a program for organizations accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to ensure healthy, genetically diverse animal populations and safeguard against extinction.

Tisa was paired with our 4-year-old bull giraffe, Mapenzi, and we hope these two will help grow our herd in a couple of years!

Tisa has been doing great since her arrival, and her smart and sweet personality has quickly made her a favorite among some of our keepers, guests and volunteers.

“Tisa has never been super shy, but she has gained quite a bit of confidence and trust with her keepers over the last year,” said area supervisor Tammy. “She loves to participate in training sessions, including voluntary blood draws and hoof trims.” These training sessions give our animal residents the confidence to be a part of their own healthcare at our Zoo.

Since her first day on the veldt, Sprinkle, one of our younger male giraffes, and Tisa have been inseparable.

“When she was working on getting comfortable with shifting onto the veldt and into the barn, Sprinkle would always go out to get her and bring her into the barn,” noted Tammy.

Tisa has also learned a lot from longtime residents Doc and Kumi, often mimicking their behaviors.

At only two-and-a-half years old, Tisa still has a couple more years of growing to do, but she often uses her short height to her advantage.

“Because she is so cute and small, she tries to get as many treats from her keepers as possible,” said Tammy. “We just can’t help but love her.”

Want to help Masai giraffe? In the past, we have partnered with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, an organization on the front lines of giraffe research and protection. By supporting conservation organizations on a community level, we can work together to save these gentle giants from extinction.
