Two capybaras walk across the ground in a Zoo enclosure. One of them faces the side, and one of them is facing forward.

Let’s welcome Luna, Tupi and Ginny!

We’re capy to share three new additions to our Zoo family: capybaras Luna, Tupi and Ginny! Luna is social media star Tupi’s mom and Ginny’s sister.

The trio traveled all the way from the San Antonio Zoo in Texas as part of the Association of Zoo and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, acting as a safeguard for their species which faces threats like hunting and deforestation in their natural range.

A capybara walks across the ground, facing leftward.

The capybaras will live in a mixed species habitat in our Rainforest Revealed loop.

Hailing from South America, capybaras are the largest rodent species in the world—adult capybaras can grow to around whopping 170 pounds at their heaviest. They are also semiaquatic, meaning they can thrive in both land and aquatic environments. We’ve already seen the trio enjoying their habitat pools.

A capybara pokes their head out from a shallow pool with green water.

The capybaras have had a blast exploring their new space.

Our Zoo is no stranger to the capybara species. In fact, our late capybara, Calypso, was the very first animal resident we welcomed to our Rainforest Revealed loop—she was later joined by another capybara, Biggie. Though these two beloved animal residents have now passed, our team is excited to welcome the species back to our Zoo with 4-year-old Luna, 1-year-old Tupi and 4-year-old Ginny.

So far, the capy family has been settling in nicely to their new home, spending much of their time munching on leafy greens, swimming and meeting their habitat-mates, coscoroba swans Tuba and Trumpet and Baird’s tapir Mia.

Be sure to stop by on your next Zoo visit to say hi!
