Trumpet and Tuba are always side by side.

We have some swan-derful news! We’ve welcomed two new coscoroba swan residents to our Rainforest Revealed loop!

Tuba, our 5-year-old male, and Trumpet, our 4-year-old female, now call our Tapir Yard home. You can see these two snow white swans resting side by side on the banks of their pond, taking a quick dip in the water or preening one another affectionately. The pair is still adjusting to their new surroundings, so they are a bit timid. However, their new animal care team is working on building lasting and trust-filled relationships with these newcomers, and we can’t wait to see how the pair thrives under our care and how their personalities evolve.

Coscoroba swans are the smallest of the swan species, and they are native to South America. They can be found across the lower portion of the continent, all the way from southern Brazil to the Falkland Islands. Their new Tapir Yard home is most similar to that of their native range, with multiple water sources and ample vegetation.

These swans are important to their ecosystems as they maintain aquatic plant growth, and they’ve already been seen fulfilling this calling by snacking on the plant material at the bottom of their pools. Their species name comes from the raspy vocalizations they make, which sound like they’re saying “cos-co-ba” or similar variations of the word.

Once Tuba and Trumpet feel confident in their new space, they will be introduced to Mia, our 7-year-old Baird’s tapir, and begin sharing the space with her. Mia is an expert at living with a variety of different bird species, and we expect them to get on swimmingly once they’re introduced.

Make sure to keep an eye out for these beautiful new feathered residents!
