A barnacle-crusted adult loggerhead sea turtle has found a safe harbor at our Sea Turtle Healing Center.
Named “Harbor” because of the location of her stranding, this 170-pound loggerhead came to us after being found debilitated on a Cape Canaveral beach. Thank you to the Sea Turtle Preservation Society for bringing Harbor to us.
Harbor is encrusted by barnacles and anemic due to an abundance of marine leeches. Our Healing Center team has started the slow process of removing the barnacles and leeches. Harbor has been started on antibiotics and fluid therapy. An ultrasound found that Harbor, who we presume is female, doesn’t contain eggs.
We hope with rest, medicine and good nutrition, this sea turtle will be back in their natural habitat in the next few months!
If you find a sea turtle in distress at the beach or in the water, call the Preservation Society hotline for Brevard County locations at 321-206-0646. Outside of the County, call Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1-888-404-3922.
