Welcome Naia and Zuba!

We’ve welcomed two black and white colobus monkeys to our Zoo! Say hello to females Naia and Zuba on your next visit to the Zoo –their new home is in our former ring-tailed lemur island in Expedition Africa!   

These two joined our Zoo from Nashville Zoo at Grassmere as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). Colobus monkey populations are decreasing in their natural range of central Africa and are vulnerable to extinction due to habitat loss and fragmentation and human predation.   

Last month, we shared that a male Colobus monkey would also be joining the troop. His move has been unexpectedly delayed, but we hope to welcome him in the coming weeks.   

We’re proud to be able to help contribute to the growing, healthy population of these incredible primates in human care that will act as a safeguard population and ambassadors for their native counterparts.

Naia and Zuba 

Age: Naia is 7 years old, while Zuba is 6 years old.  

Previous Zoo: Nashville Zoo at Grassmere.  

Favorite foods: Romaine, Swiss chard, bok choy, bell pepper, tomato, edamame, carrot, sweet potato and white potato.  

Personalities: While Zuba is more outgoing and quicker to engage with her keepers and enrichment, Naia is the more dominant of the two.  

Favorite enrichment: They love browse, clear puzzle feeders, hammocks, hanging barrels and firehose swings.  

Skills: Naia and Zuba’s previous animal care team shared that they’re both eager to train! They’re very engaged in each session. The girls stay calm during injections, show their hands, and “target,” or touch a special sign when asked. 

Extra tidbits: Naia and Zuba are sisters!
