Now, there’s even more reason to look up in our Rainforest Revealed loop! This section of our Zoo is well-known for its “sky tunnels,” overhead pathways that allow animal residents like our jaguars, capuchins, two-toed sloths and black howler monkeys opportunities to check out different habitats or simply roam. And now, we’ve added even more exploration trails for some of our smaller species to enjoy!
Offering our animal residents meaningful choice and control over how they spend their day is so important to us. These pathways give our Rainforest residents an enriching environment full of safe challenges to help them be at their best, both physically and mentally.
This impactful way to increase animal wellbeing was made possible by the generosity of community members Dawn and Mike Sullivan. Thank you on behalf of our Zoo – especially the smaller primates who have already started enjoying these new spaces!
So, who might you now see adventuring in these new tunnels? Our cotton-top tamarin family, golden-headed lion tamarin siblings, two-toed sloth family, white-faced saki troop and white-nosed coati band can all have access to certain pathways.
Not all these trails are completely visible from our main Rainforest boardwalk. One in particular, however, has some extra potential for checking out the cuteness: A pathway allowing our cotton-top tamarin family to adventure over the boardwalk! Take a look the next time you pass by their habitat.
Our animal care team will monitor how they use the tunnels throughout the day, even using cameras for observations.
Expect some habitat swapping in the future as our animal residents become more comfortable! For now, they have access to the tunnels and the ability to decide whether to explore or not.
We’ve seen Chuckie the white-faced saki monkey along with her pal Brissa the golden-headed lion tamarin take to the tunnels as a way to check out the Rainforest. Our cotton-top tamarin family has also been enjoying their pathway early mornings! Be sure to stop by to enjoy some of the adventures our small primates have been on!
