New Skunk Sisters

These three have been getting on great in their new behind-the-scenes habitat!

Our skunk squad has grown! We recently welcomed three new striped skunks to our Zoo crew.

The trio arrived from another organization accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums as part of an Ambassador striped skunk breeding program. These three 4-month-old sisters will be joining our other two resident skunks, Dexter and DeeDee, as part of our Ambassador Animal team. As Ambassadors, our skunks will help educate guests on the importance of their species in their native habitats through special educational programs. Their species’ intelligence and high-energy make skunks great Ambassadors, plus their adorable and fun-loving demeanors keep everyone engaged and wanting to learn more.

Skunks can learn a variety of behaviors, from walking alongside their animal care team to targeting. Currently, their animal care team has started training the girls on how to enter and exit their secure carriers and walk to a moving target. We are moving at the girls’ pace as they learn new skills, but so far everyone has been motivated and curious. These behaviors will help them be comfortable when being transported to and from events, and it allows for choice and control. Our animals are always encouraged to exercise their use of choice and control – they decide whether they follow a cue or even attend or complete a program. Plus, training time helps develop their trust with their animal care team.

When they aren’t having special one-on-one time with their keepers, they’re often doing what baby skunks do: playing, climbing, digging and exploring!

For now, the new trio will be staying behind the scenes as they learn and grow in a comfortable and familiar environment. However, once they’re bigger they will be joining Dexter and DeeDee in the Rainforest Ambassador Complex in our Rainforest Revealed area. We will let you know as soon as you can spot these guys in their new habitat.
