Jack and Poe are already busy exploring their new habitat.
We’re swinging in to introduce you to our two newest members of our Rainforest Revealed loop, father and son Goeldi monkey duo, 22-year-old Jack and 9-year-old Poe! We’re thrilled to welcome this new species to our Zoo. Jack and Poe came to us from another organization accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and are settling in well.
Their animal care team is still getting to know the two monkeys, but so far, they are proving to be an outgoing, curious and friendly pair. They’re also getting along well with their white-faced saki monkey, golden-headed lion tamarin and Linne’s two-toed sloth habitat mates. They’ve even been caught stealing some snacks from their saki monkey friends and spying on their jaguar neighbors.
Goeldi monkeys may look similar to our resident tamarins, but they are actually quite unique! These monkeys are the only species classified in the Callimico genus, a part of the marmoset and tamarin family. They differ from their tamarin and marmoset cousins due to having three molars instead of two and only birthing a single offspring at a time, rather than twins.
These primates are endemic to South America, residing in the Amazonian regions of Colombia, Brazil, Peru and Bolivia. They sport a thick, black coat and only weigh in at about one pound!
This species is considered vulnerable with populations decreasing in their native range due to threats like deforestation and habitat fragmentation. We’re proud to welcome these two species to our Zoo and allow them to be ambassadors for their native counterparts. We hope you get a chance to see the duo in person in our Rainforest Revealed loop soon!
