Two rock hyrax pups

Look at those tiny paws!

These newborns rock! On Wednesday, June 19, we welcomed rock hyrax pups Turnip and Radish, both of whom appear to be in excellent health.

We don’t yet know the sexes of the pups. The duo was born to mom Buffy and dad Fangs, who gave us Gnocchi and Hashbrown last year. They’re living behind the scenes, so they’re not visible just yet.

Although these fluffballs only weigh around eight pounds as adults, their closest living relatives are elephants and manatees—can you see the resemblance?

Rock hyraxes are found in dry, rocky habitats throughout Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, where human hunting has led to population decline in some areas.
