Juvenile green sea turtle

Name: Scallywag

Species: Green

Date admitted: May 8, 2019

Stranding location: Playalinda Beach

Status: Deceased

Admission notes: This juvenile green sea turtle was brought to the Healing Center from Playalinda Beach. Overall, this turtle looks awesome, with minimal epibiota and great body condition. We have a suspicion that this turtle may have internal parasites, but are waiting for fecals to confirm.

August 1, 2019: Scallywag came out for a checkup on Wednesday to remove the sutures left from surgery. While removing the sutures, Dr. Zachariah discovered that the incision site was healing poorly and there was a need to go back into surgery to fix it. During surgery, it was found that the esophageal tissue was in poor condition. The turtle was not able to heal the site properly due to its underlying ailments. The most humane path for Scallywag was, unfortunately, euthanasia.

July 26, 2019: Scallywag will be getting their sutures out next week! This turtle is continuing to receive cold laser therapy on the incision site.

July 18, 2019: Scallywag’s suture site from surgery is healing very well and will hopefully be removed in the next couple weeks. This turtle has been on a lettuce-only diet since surgery and they seem to be able to swallow and digest their food properly.

July 15, 2019: Scallywag is recovering well from surgery and their stink is gone! Barium pills were placed in the esophagus during surgery to track movement of the digestive tract. Daily x-rays are being taken to monitor the movement of the pills.

July 5, 2019: Scallywag has beaten their positive blood culture! Unfortunately though, while this turtle was out for treatments last week, we noticed this turtle….. STINKS. It could mean a lot of things, but we pinpointed the smell was coming from the mouth. After an esophageal lavage and a quick peek down the throat with the endoscope, we noticed something was indeed abnormal. Scallywag will be going into surgery to hopefully uncover what is going on in there.

June 21, 2019: This turtle is blood-culture positive and is currently being treated with two new antibiotics to hopefully combat this. On the positive side, Scallywag is officially Caryospora free!

June 13, 2019: Scallywag has had three clean fecals and is officially Caryospora-free! Unfortunately, this turtle still came up with trematodes but was recently treated.

June 7, 2019: Scallywag has had two Caryospora-free fecals. Just one more and they can be deemed Caryospora-free!

May 24, 2019: Scallywag has had one Caryospora-free fecal. Only two more to go!

May 17, 2019: Scallywag came back positive for Caryospora and received their first treatment. We will recheck in a week to see if we were able to get the protozoa under control!
