Name: Captain Kirk
Date admitted: May 10, 2019
Stranding location: Smyrna Dunes Park, New Smyrna
Admission notes: This juvenile green sea turtle was brought to the Healing Center on May 10 from New Smyrna. Upon intake, Captain Kirk appeared lethargic and had shell inflammation. This turtle also came to us with partial carapace bones exposed.
June 7, 2019: Kirk, unfortunately, started to decline last week. We made the tough decision to humanely euthanize this turtle. Kirk was severely emaciated before coming to us and we believe their body was in too poor of health to respond to treatments as quickly as they needed. Upon necropsy, we found that this turtle was a male.
May 24, 2019: This turtle does not seem to be responding to treatments—at least not as quickly as we would like. Captain Kirk stopped eating and must be gavage fed every day now. They spend a lot of time resting on their itchy.
May 17, 2019: This turtle is a little slow at eating, but will pick on their algae. In the meantime, we have begun gavage feeding to supplement.
