Behind the Scenes

Name: Scrooge

Species: Green

Date admitted: December 8, 2017

Stranding location: Port Canaveral

Status: In treatment

Admission notes: This little turtle came to us from Port Canaveral with a fishing hook in his flipper. He also had a huge bundle of monofilament line, braided line, lures, hooks and weights wrapped around his front flippers.

January 7, 2018: Due to our water heaters failing, Scrooge was pulled from his tank due to cold water temperatures. He’s temporarily inside and warm until we get the tanks fixed.

December 23, 2017: Scrooge is doing okay. We got quite a surprise when his blood culture came back positive since he doesn’t act like a septic turtle. We started him on a different antibiotic to treat the infection and we will not attempt hook-removal  surgery until the infection is gone. He is eating really well and is active in his tank.

December 11, 2017: We were able to remove the hook from Scrooge’s flipper without a problem. However, radiographs revealed a hook in Scrooge’s esophagus.
