Sea turtle Leapling

Name: Leapling

Species: Green

Date admitted: February 29, 2020

Stranding location: Trident Basin

Status: In treatment

Admission notes: This juvenile green sea turtle was caught by UCF during their population studies in the Trident Basin. Leapling displayed an older wound from what looks to be an interaction with a propeller, but it is completely healed. This turtle also has a newer fracture down the carapace, following the spine. There is a small piece of soft tissue in this fracture that moves up and down as the turtle breathes. A CT scan was performed to see if the fracture communicates with the spine.

UPDATES

April 2, 2020: This turtle continues to progress! At this point in time, we are waiting for the soft tissue along the fracture on the carapace to heal a little more and then we will get this turtle back out to the big blue. We also increased the amount of proteins and lettuce fed to Leapling.

March 30, 2020: The crack on this turtle’s carapace is healing great. Leapling is off their medication and continuing to improve!

March 12, 2020: Leapling’s CT scan results showed that there was no sustained damage to the spine along the carapace fracture site! This turtle is a good eater and is making progress.
