Great news from the Mexican conservation group, Naturalia, A.C., about Mexican gray wolves, a project the Zoo has supported in the past!

Brevard Zoo and Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Indian River Lagoon Shoreline Restoration Project (FDEP IRL SRP) are now planning to hold workshops at the Zoo and would like to invite Brevard County residents to participate!

The Zoo and FDEP IRL SRP partnered last year to increase awareness of the Indian River Lagoon Shoreline Restoration Project. Zoo guests, schools, and scout troops took red mangroves provided by the Zoo and cared for these plants at home for months. These plant “foster parents” returned more than 200 red mangroves which were provided to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to be used in future restoration plantings along the Lagoon!

The workshops will be from 6 to 7 p.m. in Brevard Zoo's Education Department with a fieldtrip out to the Indian River Lagoon exhibit in the Paws On area of the Zoo. Amy Reaume, Brevard Zoo's Head Aquarist and Aquatic Conservation Coordinator, and Jacqueline Owen from Florida Department of Environmental Protection will be leading these workshops. The workshops will include the history of the FDEP IRL Shoreline Restoration Project, the importance of mangroves and shoreline restoration, plant care, and how to get involved in more conservation projects. At the end of the workshop, participants will take home a plant to "foster".

A female Masai giraffe born Saturday, August 27, at the Brevard Zoo is now out on exhibit! Be sure to stop by the giraffe platform on your next visit to the Zoo and meet the new giraffe baby. The new giraffe was born to dad, Raffiki, and mom, Johari. This is the fourth birth for Johari. Other offspring include Melvin, 5, who recently went to the Metro Richmond Zoo this past spring; Stephanie, 3, who now resides at Disney?s Animal Kingdom; and Joey, who turned 1 in March and still resides at the Zoo. Milenna, the Zoo?s other Masai giraffe, gave birth to a male, Rafeano, in April.
